How To Use This Site
Please read the handy tips guide on how to use this site, before listing your books, it will help you in both the short and long term.
- Registration. You should register for the standard membership! This allows you to list your books at auction and to bid on any other books listed. The visitors membership does not allow you to list any books!
- Pictures. A picture paints a thousand words! You can use up to five photographs to best display the condition of your book, if you are unsure how to photograph your books then read this article book photography. Keep the size of the pictures to a maximum of 600 pixels in width and in the jpeg format, this will ensure they display properly, help speed the upload times and not burden the server.
- Duration. How many days should you list for? You can list your books for up to thirty days. It is strongly recommended that you list for the maximum time allowed, as this will help get you the exposure and interest your books deserve. The reason for the longer listing is pretty simple: the serious book collector never makes hasty purchases, they will see your book, then look around for a better deal (I know I certainly do), so if you only list for ten days, your auction will have finished before they have had a chance to research it!. The option to auto re-list up to 12 times is also available, this option is also highly recommended as it automates the re-listing process for you and again helps the buyer if he missed the closing first time around. Try to list your books at a reasonable time of the day, as this will effect the time the auction ends, you do not want your auctions finishing at 0400hrs on a Monday morning as most bidders will not be online! Plan the listing of your auction to finish and coincide with pay day (the first day of the month), you are more likely to get extra bids that way.
- Type of Auction. Fixed start price or reserve? The answer to this question is relative, list the book at the minimum price you are willing to accept, e.g. If you want £10.00 for your book then start it at £10.00, this way you avoid any disappointment. If you list below its value e.g. £1.00 and you only get one bid for £1.00, you are obliged to sell at the final bid price. A reserve sometimes puts bidders off as they want to know what the seller is willing to accept, but again it is personal preference.
- Descriptions. Condition is everything in book collecting, as it effects value. Be as comprehensive as you can, read the grading guide and describe your auctions accordingly. Buyers will not be happy if you omit or falsely describe your books.
- Pricing. It stands to reason that bidders will not be attracted if your book is over priced, if you have no clue as to your books value then use the free valuation service to get an idea of a start price.
- Payment. Once the auction is over the onus is on the bidder and the seller to communicate. The payment methods are: personal cheque, money order, paypal or Escrow. It is highly recommended that all buyers and sellers use paypal, it has comprehensive protection programs for both the buyer and seller. Any auction above £200.00 in value should be done using Escrow, again this is for the protection of both the buyer and the seller. Never send your book until you have received payment and the funds have cleared!
Lastly happy hunting and good luck with your auctions.
